This timeline that we created tells about the history of many space companies and the people who started them.
1957 - October 4: Soviet Union launched Sputnik into space.
- November 20: Sputnik 2 was launched with a dog, Laika. Unfortunately Laika didn't survive.
1958 - January 31: The United States launched Explorer 1.
1960 - August 19: Soviet Union launched Sputnik 5 with dogs, Strelka and Belka. They bacame the first living creatures to survive a trip in space.
1961 - April 12: Yuri Gagarin was the first human to be in space.
- May 5: Alan Shepard became the first American in space.
1962 - February 20: John Glenn was the first America to orbit the Earth.
- June 16: Valentina Nikolayea Tereshkova was the first woman in space.
1965 - Marh 18: Alexei Leonov was the first man to walk through space by a tether.
- June 3: Ed White was the first American to walk in space.
- Mariner 4 was sent out and retrieved the first pictures of Mars.
1966 - February 3: Luna 9 was the first space craft to land on the moon.
- June 2: Surveyor 1 was the first American space craft to land on the moon.
1968 - September 15: Zond 5 orbitted the moon and returned back to Earth.
- December 21 - Apollo 8 was launched.
1969 - July 20: Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins were the first men on the moon.
1970 - April 11: Apollo 13 was launched.
- September 12: Luna 16 was launched and recieved soil samples of the moon.
- December 15: Venera 7 was the first probe to land on Venus.
1971 - July 30: The first rover was driven on the moon.
- November 13: Mariner 9 was the first space craft to orbit Mars.
1973 - May 14: The United States launched Skylab, its first space station.
1979 - March and July: Voyagers 1 and 2 sent out pictures of Jupiter.
- Spetember: Pioneer 11 reacahed Saturn and sent out pictures.
1981 - April 12: Columbia was the first space shuttle to be launched.
1983 - April 4: Challenger was the second space shuttle to be launched.
- June 19: Sally Ride was the first American woman in space.
1984 - February 3: Bruce McCandless was the first man to walk in space untethered.
- August 30: Discovery was launched.
- October: Kathryn Sullivan became the first American woman to walk in space.
1985 - October 3: Atlantis was launched.
1986 - January 24: Voyager 2 sent out images of Uranus.
1989 - August: Voyager 2 sent out images of Neptune.
1990 - August 10: Magellan started to map Venus using radar equipment.
- August 24: Discovery launched the Hubble Space Telescope.
1995 - February 2: Eileen Collins was the first female to pilot a shuttle.
- December: Galileo sent out data on Jupiter.
1997 - July 4: Mars Pathfinder landed on Mars and sent out picutres.
2000 - February 14: NEAR began to send out images of Eros, the asatroid.
2001 - February 12: NEAR landed on Eros.
2003 - August 25: NASA launched Spitzer Space Telescope, the largest infared telescope in space.
2004 - January 14: President Bush suggested a space program that would send humans to the moon in 2015 and
establish a base to Mars.
- July 1: Cassini sent photographs of Saturn's rings.
2005 - July 3: NASA spacecraft collided with a comet creating a desgin to help scientists study the basic unit of life on Earth.
- June 26: Discovery was launched with 7 astronausts aboard.
2006 - January 15: Stardust returned back to Earth with the first dust collected from a comet.
2007 - August 4: NASA launched Phoenix Mars Lander.
2008 - January 14: Messenger flew 124 miles above Mercury.
2009 - March 6: Kepler was launched.
- June 18: NASA launched Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite for planets outside of the Milky Way.
2010 - December 8: SpaceX was the first ever private company to launch a spcaecraft into orbit.
2011 - November 26: NASA launched Curiosity to Mars.
2012 - August 6: Curiosity succesfully landed on Mars.
